ICELAND: Reykjavik to Vik

April 12, 2016

Good afternoon/evening/we don’t know because the sun stays up for so long here and we’re tired!

We’ve now been awake for 32 hours (since plane naps don’t count whatsoever) so this may be scattered. Today has been up and down, falling asleep while driving around and wide awake, excited when we get out to see something new. But let me start at the beginning.

We arrived in Reykjavik at 5 a.m. this morning and had breakfast at an adorable little café called Sandholt Bakery. I got to eat a cinnamon roll and lean on some pillows and I felt like my exhaustion from the lack of sleep and hike up a mountain to the city with all of our bags was aaaalllllll better. That’s where we posted our last blog post, and met a friendly couple our age who were just finishing their road trip. They were the nicest people we met in Reykjavik! Either we look mean and intimidating with our matching hiking pants or the people of Reykjavik aren’t very friendly – you guess for yourself – but no one talked to us or even smiled at us. We sure aren’t in Georgia anymore.

Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik.

Once we ate, we took a walk to the harbor, which looked like a fake mountain backdrop had been put up across the water. It was amazing.

Then we rode a bus with a very chatty old man to our van rental place and temporarily adopted our little Go Camper, Buddy. (Name inspired by an elf I know.) Isn’t he cute?

That began our road trip around the Ring Road of Iceland. Our stops are below listed under the photos!

Michelle being trendy.
Leaving Reykjavik.
Urridafoss (anything with “foss” on the end means waterfall).

Hiking to an old abandoned pool.
Iceland’s oldest swimming pool with natural hot water: Seljavallalaug. Several couples made this an awkward experience and we passed on getting in.
Skogafoss
Dyrholaey Peninsula

Now, we’ve just eaten our dinner of Ramen and Peanut Butter Ritz crackers, played a game of War in the back of Buddy (Michelle won), and we’re heading to bed (it’s 7:30).

All in all, an exciting first day that will lead to even better days ahead. Stay tuned!

Love,

Michelle and Taylor

Looks very “Eesland” ish! Glad y’all are having fun and post as often as you can, so Mom doesn’t ask me constantly if I’ve heard from you ha. Ready to hear all about it.

    Love you both.
