Day 5!

April 16, 2016

Today we woke up with great ambitions to explore Snaefellsnes Peninsula and hike all the hikes we could bear, but Mother Nature woke up on the OTHER side of the bed. We got to see a waterfall, a mountain, and some rocks, but other than that, we mostly drove through strong winds and rain and craved mac and cheese.

The rocks we saw in the morning at Berserkjahraun are actually hardened lava from an old volcano eruption, which was pretty cool. The not-cool thing was that it hadn’t started raining yet, so we spent more time on rock fields than we should have had we known what was coming. Dun dun dun.

Soon after that we came to Kirkjufells (mountain) and Kirkjufellsfoss (waterfall). This is the most photographed mountain in Iceland due to its unique shape and the fact that it sits all alone at the edge of the coast. This is about when the storm came into view.

We then headed further into Snaefellsnes and the rain joined us. Soon we were being blown around by a strong wind and misty rain. This put us both in a great mood for a while, attempting to get out and hike here and there and regretting it in the end. We ended up driving around the edges of the whole peninsula and, seeing that the rain wasn’t letting up, decided to move on. We did stop at a cave to explore it some and found that it had water running through it, so Taylor left me behind as he went all “mountain man” and climbed up some crazy rocks. His GoPro head video will be included in our video collage of the trip so you can see!

Next on our list was Hraunfossar (another waterfall), and what do you know, the Lord opened up the clouds for about 15 minutes for us to enjoy that stop today. There were some tourists there which was annoying as always, but some sun time and beautiful waterfalls improved our spirits.

Hraunfossar

Finally, we stopped at Glymur (a THIRD waterfall) to do what I thought was going to be a short hike to the second tallest waterfall in Iceland. Think again, Michelle. We hiked a mile’s distance across rivers and mountains and hills, holding onto ropes and praying for safety to get to this view. So, appreciate the photos! I worked really hard to get them for you. I guess Taylor did, too.

Now we’re in Borgarnes at an Olis gas station (our favorite) posting these blogs, editing pictures, eating and using their very clean bathrooms. Maybe tomorrow we’ll get another hot spring bath, but for now, we can sleep surrounded by the scent of our bodies crying from all these hikes. Yikes.

We decided to get dinner at Olis and thought we were ordering four mini burgers… They brought out four full plates. We combined them into two to look less like pigs. Taylor ate 2 3/4 burgers and hasn’t started regretting it yet.

Love,

Michelle & Taylor
