Washington, D.C.

Hello friends and family!

We’re are so excited to finally be on the plane headed to Iceland! We’ve spent a few days in Charlottesville, VA with Christy and Sam (Michelle’s sister and her husband) and today in D.C. seeing the sights, since Taylor had never been.  Somehow we’re already tired even though we haven’t even left for our real trip yet…

Last night we drove up to Baltimore to see the harbor and if the crime was really worth all it’s cracked up to be. And guess what? Nothing stolen! Either the crime isn’t so bad or Taylor waving his new pistol in the air deterred the ruffians from their ruffles. Either way, safe and sound and windy and cold. See below.

After stealing breakfast at the hotel next door, we were determined to see all the D.C. landmarks in one day. Impossible you say? Not with a BIKE! All the sad little tourists using their feet only wished they had thought of the idea before trekking all the way from the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial and seeing how far they had still to go. Meanwhile, we enjoyed the sights AND the breeze gently lifting our hair as the scent of cherry blossoms wafted across our nostrils. We managed to see the Jefferson Memorial (along with 200 middle schoolers armed with iPhones and selfie sticks), FDR Memorial, MLK Memorial, Washington Monument, Korean War Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, White House, Panera, and the Smithsonian all in four hours! We’re fast peddlers.

These were left for a true American hero at the Vietnam War Memorial.

The Smithsonian wore out our feet (bikes aren’t allowed inside) so we packed it up and started to head to the Baltimore Airport, but not before stopping at a nearby campground to use the showers and thank the Lord for this last chance to be clean before we get stank for the next 8 days.

Now, we’ve already broken into our snack collection for Iceland and are going to try to get some sleep before we land in Keflavik at 5 a.m. Wish us luck! We have our knives and forks ready to dig into some whale and puffin. (Or do they eat them with a spork? A spear?)

Love y’all!

Taylor and Michelle
